The Desires of Your Heart

Last Sunday I preached for the first part of our new series “Stuff in the Basement” and I referred to a passage in the book of Psalms –

Psalm 37 verse 4 (NLT)
Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you your heart’s desires.

I mentioned that our part in that is the first part – taking delight in the Lord, while the second part is up to God!

One of the ways we can delight in the Lord is to watch and listen out for Him and be attentive to the things He wants to tell us. I thought I’d share with you some photos from some recent bike rides and walks my wife Claire and I have been enjoying, which show really delightful displays of God’s creation:

                                  poppies

                                  rainbow

Aren’t they amazing? I also took a photo last weekend during my morning quiet time. As I looked out into our garden, the scene was dominated by a new football goal that our boys Samson and Harry have recently acquired. It is sitting alongside the old one they have had since they were much smaller boys:

                                 goal posts

I felt that God was telling me something and that something was this: “As you grow, you need bigger goals.” Obvious, really, but it has really made me think, especially as it came just as I had been thinking about the talk on the desires of our hearts.

What are your goals? Have they gotten bigger as you have matured in your faith? If you haven’t really thought about it, can I really, really encourage you (OK, I’m telling you!) to write them down? Think about what you really want from your relationships, your work, your family life, your walk with God, your hobbies, your future… and write those things down. Chat with God about them, seriously and often. What will your part be, and what will He do?

And as you delight yourself in the Lord, may He give you the desires of your heart.

Every blessing,

Simon
